Kdenlive 24.05 Arrives with Automatic Subtitle Translation and Improved Support for TikTok

Kdenlive 24.05 has been officially announced as the new stable version of the well-known non-linear video editor from the KDE project, which is possibly the most popular application in its segment among those released as free software. This time, we find a handful of new features that are useful in real-world contexts.

The first noteworthy feature of Kdenlive 24.05 is the ability to render videos in more aspect ratio formats, including vertical and square formats. This can be particularly useful for creating content for platforms like TikTok or YouTube Shorts, which are videos that are no longer than a minute and are vertically oriented.

The second most interesting feature is the ability to apply an effect to a group of clips in the timeline so that it doesn't have to be configured clip by clip. While this isn't a revolution in itself, it will undoubtedly help to speed up production considerably. Obviously, the group of clips must be selected beforehand to apply the effect to it.

Audio capture, which was not present in the previous release due to pending the transition to Qt 6, has returned in Kdenlive 24.05. As expected, this feature is now built with the latest version of the well-known graphical framework. Additionally, it's possible to set the default capture folder in the project tray and configure it so that captures are stored in a subdirectory within the project folder rather than just the root.

Another interesting feature that has been added is the automatic translation of subtitles using SeamlessM4T, which is a process that runs locally without requiring an internet connection. The approach taken by the developers is excellent for preserving user privacy and is reminiscent of what Mozilla has done with the translator implemented in Firefox.

Kdenlive 24.05 has also included “an easy-to-use interface for creating and editing external camera proxy profiles,” and a proxy profile for the Insta 360 AcePro camera has been added. This is in addition to various fixes to make the handling of multiple file containers and resources more stable. Subtitle fonts have been improved with the addition of bold and italic attributes, and it's now possible to configure playback and pause by clicking on the playback monitor. An option to “play the area from the cursor” has been added, and panning and zooming with the middle mouse button have been improved.

Finally, to highlight the most important features, there is improved AV1 support through NVENC (NVIDIA’s proprietary renderer), faster operations in the timeline, optimizations that enhance the application's performance, and a good number of fixes covering components such as FFmpeg, Windows, and Flatpak, among others.

As we can see, Kdenlive 24.05 takes care of recovering an important feature that was left behind after the transition to Qt 6 and updates the editor to better suit the production of short videos like those on TikTok and YouTube Shorts. All the details are published in the official announcement, while the application can be downloaded from the official website’s download section for Linux (AppImage and Flatpak), Windows, and macOS. The Snap format build is also official but hasn't been updated yet.
