AlmaLinux 9.4 Available with "Full Compatibility" with RHEL

AlmaLinux 9.4 is now available for download, the first Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) clone to emerge with a new version following the launch of RHEL 9.4 earlier this week. Indeed, it is a true clone of "enterprise Linux," according to its developers, though that's not entirely accurate.

This distinction is necessary because after Red Hat's changes to the distribution of its code last year, AlmaLinux was the only clone that adapted by offering an alternative process to continue its operations. Essentially, AlmaLinux shifted from maintaining binary compatibility to ABI-level compatibility, moving its base from RHEL to CentOS Stream.

"AlmaLinux is built from the same sources as RHEL, promises full compatibility with RHEL, and is built from freely available open-source code," states the official announcement for AlmaLinux 9.4. "This makes it the only choice for anyone seeking a true open-source enterprise Linux," they add. Which is it?

To explain the new distribution creation process in more detail, the announcement includes a video that, contrary to the claim, follows the previously stated direction. In other words, AlmaLinux is now based on CentOS Stream, a continuously updated edition on which RHEL itself is developed, but not entirely. AlmaLinux maintainers build many packages independently.

Regardless, AlmaLinux 9.4 incorporates most of the new features of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.4, enhanced with its own contributions, as we noted in the beta release: particularly, support for some older hardware removed by RHEL from its default configuration.

All the new features of AlmaLinux 9.4 are detailed in the release notes.

AlmaLinux 9.4 is available for four architectures: Intel/AMD (x86_64), ARM64 (aarch64), IBM PowerPC (ppc64le), and IBM Z (s390x), as well as images for cloud, containers, and other platforms. Additionally, AlmaLinux is dedicated to the desktop environment and offers installation and live images with desktops like GNOME, KDE, Xfce, and MATE. Download AlmaLinux 9.4.
